Indaba Lodge Richards Bay is a welcoming coastal retreat that blends modern elegance with genuine African hospitality. Guests can enjoy dining at Trevally’s Restaurant, named after the legendary GT fish, adding a local touch to every meal. Indaba Lodge Richards Bay is an ideal destination for both relaxation and business, providing stylish accommodations and a memorable experience for every guest.

EARLY BEGINNINGS

The hotel was originally owned by John Rumble, with longtime GM Errard Sullivan at the helm. Known for its beloved restaurant, Vis en Vleis, the hotel served as a local favourite, later renamed Trevally’s, inspired by the legendary fighting fish, the GT or Giant King Fish. The property changed hands to Hospitality Property Fund, which enlisted Protea Hotels to manage it until the next chapter of its evolution.

2016

African Procurement Agencies acquired the hotel from Hospitality Property Fund, transforming it from Protea Hotel Richards Bay into the newly rebranded Indaba Lodge Richards Bay. This acquisition sparked a significant refurbishment, with an overhaul of the entire lower area and apartments, setting a fresh, contemporary tone for the lodge. The renowned Mowana Boutique Spa also opened its doors, bringing a luxurious escape to Richards Bay.

2023

To maintain its commitment to guest comfort, all bedrooms were stylishly updated, adding modern décor and amenities to enhance the inviting atmosphere and create a memorable experience for each visitor.

2024

This year marked a milestone expansion with a brand-new conference center, accommodating up to 150 delegates, along with two new boardrooms. The conference facility is housed in the space where The Little Switzerland restaurant, Strand Loper convenience store, Surfs Up Surf Shop, and Acutts Estate Agents once thrived. Mowana Boutique Spa also moved to the 4th floor, offering guests an elevated sanctuary with serene views and an enhanced spa experience.

From its origins under John Rumble and the vibrant years with Errard Sullivan, through Protea’s stewardship, to its rebirth as Indaba Lodge Richards Bay, this property has evolved into a premier destination for comfort, business, and rejuvenation in the heart of Richards Bay.

The Indaba Lodge Richards Bay is now part of a small group of family-owned hotels with the 81-bedroom Indaba Lodge in Gaborone and 250-bedroom Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre in Johannesburg forming the Indaba Hospitality Group. Sister Properties include the 120-bedroom Chobe Safari Lodge’s in Kasane Botswana and the 32-bedroom Nata Lodge in Nata Botswana.
